Brendan Quirk, CEO of USA Cycling on The State of USA Cycling
Quirk, who became USA Cycling’s new CEO in December, 2021, introduced himself to coaches by sharing his personal cycling journey from youth racer to cycling entrepreneur to cyclocross competitor to CEO of this Olympic governing body. In his presentation, Quirk laid out the two new top strategic priorities for USA Cycling.

Miller explored the challenges of continuing coaching development and education under the difficult circumstances of the global coronavirus pandemic, which affected USA Cycling’s budget and resources. Miller presented two new efforts aimed at restoring and improving USA Cycling’s efforts to support coaches including:
- A new position for which USA Cycling is now hiring, Coaching Development and Education Manager.
- A new coaching development and education partnership with Fast Talk Laboratories.

Miller and Connor announced a new USA Cycling partnership with Fast Talk Laboratories and Joe Friel.
Through this partnership, all active USA Cycling licensed coaches get free access to Fast Talk Laboratories and its growing knowledgebase that includes hundreds of how-to guides, articles, videos, and podcast episodes on training, coaching, sports nutrition, physiology, recovery, and sport psychology.

Connor and Miller introduced the summit keynote speaker, internationally known cycling and triathlon coach Joe Friel.
In his keynote presentation for USA Cycling coaches, Friel shares the core themes of his upcoming online learning experience, The Craft of Coaching: how to become a good, successful, and happy coach. While this topic sounds simple, a balanced pursuit of these three distinct goals is a fundamental challenge to coaching and one that is a struggle for many. Drawing from his 40-year career, Friel explores the inherent tensions and priorities of coaching and shares the lessons he has learned about the coach’s relationship with the athlete, the sport, and the business of coaching.
