How to Measure Running, with Nell Rojas

In today’s episode, we switch our cycling shoes for running shoes and discuss how runners can accurately measure and pace their training.

Traditionally, Fast Talk has been a show that explores the world of exercise science using cycling as its primary example. However, believe it or not, we don’t spend all of our time thinking about bikes! Many of our listeners and the athletes we coach are runners.

In this episode, the hosts discuss how to quantify volume, intensity, and training load—a concept we’ve discussed many times, but tweaked for the running audience. Pace and distance may be the most common metrics used to measure running, but confounding factors can make it difficult to accurately measure exercise load.

To figure how to accurately measure running, Coaches Grant Holicky and Rob Pickels enlisted the help of professional runner Nell Rojas. Beyond her personal accomplishments, Nell has a degree in exercise science from Northern Arizona University and coaches through her company Rojas Running.

We’ll also hear from Stephanie Howe, a professional ultra-runner, CTS Coach, and Ph.D. holder in nutrition and exercise science. Dr. Howe enjoys translating scientific research into individualized and actionable training and nutrition plans for her athletes.

So, slip out of those cycling shoes, lace up your racing flats, and let’s make you fast.
