Potluck Discussion: Race Weight, Not Feeling a Workout, and Big Lessons Learned

In this week’s potluck, we discuss if lighter means you always perform better, how to change things up if you’re not feeling that day’s workout, and what key tips we have to be better coaches or athletes.

Fast Talk episode 331

Welcome to another potluck conversation with Grant Holicky, Rob Pickels, and Trevor Connor. In these discussions, we bring you topics that we’re currently working through and break them down using a mix of science, humor, and our own experiences.

Is the Lighter-is-Better Mindset in Cycling Dead?
It’s a widely held belief that the lighter you are as a cyclist, the better you will perform. Old-school pros used to talk about being on race weight when the sleeves of their extra small jerseys no longer fit tightly. But now-a-days there are top pros like Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Abrahamsen who aren’t fitting the scrawny cyclist stereotype and are performing just fine. So, Coach Holicky asks whether the lighter-is-better belief is outdated

Tough it Out or Change Up the Plan?
You’ve just gone out for a ride and started the detailed workout planned by your coach, but you’re just not feeling it. It’s not that you’re tired, it’s that the workout just isn’t jibing with you. So, do you tough it out and do what’s written, or, do you change it up? And if you change it up, how much can you modify it before you’re no longer achieving the purpose your coach or plan had in mind? This is the question that Coach Connor posed to the team.

What Are the Biggest Lessons We’ve Learned That We’d Like to Share?
Almost our entire team has been both coaches and athletes for many years. Over that time, there’s things we’ve learned that we wished we knew much earlier and would like to share with our listeners. Coach Pickels asks all of us to give our one or two big tips that we learned along the way.

We don’t hold back, and neither should you. After listening to the episode, jump over to our forum and join the conversation.
